Beginning on July 20th Udemy is beginning a Beta Captioning Program. As part of this program, 1,000 courses have been chosen by Udemy for automatic captioning, using speech recognition technology.
The goal of this program is to expand the global reach of our instructors, and help make course content more accessible to students around the world. When English isn’t the native language of a student, captions can make courses easier to comprehend. Captions also provide more clarity, reinforce learning, and make courses accessible to hearing-impaired students.
This Beta Program will help us get the experience right for our students and instructors before we roll captions out to all courses.
Please note: currently only courses that are instructed in English are part of the automatic captions, beta program.
If any of your courses have been chosen for the beta program, you will receive a message in your instructor dashboard:
If automatic captions have been created and activated for your course, you will be notified via an alert in the Udemy Notification tab:
Accessing and Editing Automatic Captions
Instructors can access the automatic caption files directly from the course curriculum page. To do so, take the following steps:
1. Navigate to the curriculum page editor from your course management tools. Expand the details for each video lecture to find the corresponding .VTT caption file
2. Click “English (Auto-Generated)” to download the .VTT caption file associated with the lecture.
3. Open the .VTT file in a text editor on your machine, and make any necessary edits to the caption text (there are also a number of caption editing programs available around the web, with examples linked here). Save the changes you make, keeping the file in .VTT file format.
4. Upload the caption file to the corresponding course lecture (see the section Upload Closed Captions to Your Udemy Course in this support article). Your revised caption file will automatically replace the Automatic caption file attached to the lecture.
Inclusion in Udemy’s Automatic Captioning Program
If you want to join the program when it expands to include more courses, please email firstname.lastname@example.org, and let us know which courses you’d like to be included.
The selections for the Beta Program are already made, but this can help us prioritize courses as the program expands.
Removal From Caption Program Beta
If you are unsatisfied with the captions that were automatically generated for your course, and you want them removed as an option for students, please let us know by sending an email to email@example.com.
Please specify the course or courses you want captions disabled for, and our Support Team can take the necessary action. It’s helpful for us to know what aspects of the automatic captions were unsatisfactory, so please provide us with any feedback or details you have.
