Who has to pay VAT / GST?
Currently, students who reside in the European Union (EU), South Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Australia will be charged the tax when they purchase a course. Should the tax requirements change, Udemy reserves the right to change this policy to be in compliance at any time.
Will Udemy remit the VAT / GST I paid?
As Udemy.com is a business to consumer website, we are not able to remove references to VAT / GST from our receipts. Please note that while Udemy has an office based in Ireland to process European payments, the sale is derived from our headquarters in the United States, not Ireland.
If a customer wants a receipt without reference to VAT / GST because they are a business and therefore do not pay VAT / GST, they would need to sign up for a Udemy for Business account. If you are a business that is interested in the Udemy for Business platform, you can learn more here.
Can I get a customized receipt with Udemy’s Ireland address?
As noted above, although we have an office in Ireland, Udemy sales are actually based in the United States. As a result, the customized receipt will indicate the address for Udemy, Inc. in San Francisco, as that is the entity that took the payment.
Adding a business name and/or VAT/GST numbers is documentation only and will not change the VAT/GST charged on your order.
Is the VAT / GST added onto the course price?

How can I determine how much VAT / GST was charged?
When you enroll in a Udemy course, you will be sent a receipt via email, which will break down the course price and VAT / GST separately. The amount you paid will be shown on your receipt beside Tax . The VAT is calculated based on the net amount, rather than the total amount.
So for example, in the United Kingdom, a 20% VAT is charged. If the course is priced at £45 on the Udemy marketplace, then, £7.50 in tax is paid to meet the course’s listed price. Please see the example below:
45 / 1.2 = 37.5
37.5 + 7.5 = 45
