All instructors have the option of adding closed captions to videos lectures, or using Udemy’s auto-generated captions for English video lectures, which are created using speech recognition technology. If a course is captioned, this article outlines how you can turn the closed captions on, or use the transcripts feature to read what the instructor is saying.

Turn Closed Captions On or Off
If closed captions are available for a lecture, a closed captions icon will appear at the bottom right of the course player. Move your cursor to the icon and select the captions language you would like to see. To turn captions off, however, select the Off option.
You can also adjust the font size of the captions, and the background opacity for them, by clicking on Caption Settings. Then click on Font Size or Background Opacity to make the adjustments you wish to see. The option to have the captions appear under the course video can also be accessed in the caption settings.
Please note: If your account language is set to any other language than English, then captions in this language will appear automatically. If captions in your account language aren't available, however, then English captions will show instead.
You can turn the captions off at anytime by following the steps outlined above in the Turn Captions On or Off section. Please note that this turns captions off for all captioned courses.
For steps on how to change your account language, please refer to this support article.
The Transcripts feature is another way to read text of what instructors are saying, as you progress through their course. In addition, transcripts can help you find relevant content more easily, by providing the ability to easily navigate through text of what the instructor’s said.
You can quickly access the transcripts feature by clicking on the Transcripts at the bottom of the course player.
After you click on Transcripts, text of what the instructor’s said will open on the right-hand panel of the screen. The transcripts will be written in the same language that has been selected for the closed captions.
The current sentence will be highlighted, and then the text will autoscroll, as the instructor continues to speak. You can jump ahead, or back to any moment in the lecture, by clicking on a particular sentence.
If you wish to share your feedback on the transcripts, simply click on Give Feedback at the top.
How to Report Issues With Captions
If you experience issues with the closed captions, please let us know by using the Report a Technical Issue option, which can be accessed by clicking on the gear icon at the bottom right.
