What is the ABN requirement?

To remain compliant with local regulations, Udemy requires instructors who are located in Australia, and who do business in that nation to register for an Australian Business Number (ABN) to receive a payout. Learn more about instructor payouts and the payout schedule.

If an instructor located in Australia doesn’t have a valid ABN on file with Udemy, future payouts will be suspended. Once an ABN number is provided, payouts will be unsuspended and we’ll trigger payout of all pending earnings within 2 weeks.

Registering for an ABN is generally a straightforward process, especially when done online. By ensuring you have all the necessary information and documents ready, you can complete the application quickly and efficiently

How do I provide my ABN to Udemy?

Applicable instructors can submit their ABN to Udemy from the Payout & tax settings page. To access the page, move your cursor to your profile avatar at the top right and click on Payout & tax settings from the dropdown menu.

How can I register for an ABN?

1. Gather the required information:

You will need to provide certain details such as your Tax File Number (TFN), business structure (e.g., sole trader, partnership, company), and details about your business activities.

2. Access the online application

  • Visit the Australian Business Register (ABR) or the Business Registration Service (BRS) websites to apply online.
    • Please note: if you have any questions about accessing the application, or if you encounter any issues submitting your application on these sites, please contact the Australian Government directly for assistance.
  • The application form will guide you through the required information, including your business name, contact details, and type of business.

3. Submit your application:

After filling out the necessary details, submit your application online. Most applications are processed immediately, and you will receive your ABN instantly if your identity can be verified.

4. Confirm and document your application’s approval:

Once your application is approved, you will receive a confirmation email with your ABN and a summary of your application. You should print or save this for your records.

How long does the ABN registration process take?

  • Immediate ABN issuance:
    • For most applicants, the ABN is issued immediately upon successful completion of the online application.
  • Further review:
    • If additional information is needed or verification is required, the process may take up to 28 days.

What happens if I don’t submit an ABN to Udemy?

As noted above, If an instructor located in Australia doesn’t have a valid ABN on file with Udemy, future payouts will be suspended.

Once an ABN number is provided, payouts will be unsuspended and we’ll trigger payout of all pending earnings within 2 weeks.
