Course Quality Checklist: Use of AI

Udemy courses must meet minimum standards to be published on the Udemy platform. Learn more about the minimum course requirements checklist.

Udemy accepts courses with audio and video instruction created using quality text-to-speech (TTS) and artificial intelligence (AI) programs.

However, to maintain high-quality learning experiences for our learners, content generated using AI or TTS tools that results in low-quality, misleading, or incomplete material is restricted on the platform. Udemy does not accept courses that are entirely AI-generated. AI tools may be used to enhance and support the expertise of the instructor, but cannot replace the instructor's subject matter knowledge and expertise. The key is using AI to support, not replace, your expertise.

Additionally, instructors are required to disclose in their course description whether they have used artificial intelligence in their course content or creation process. Learn more about how to include a disclosure in your course.

What constitutes appropriate use of AI

Instructors may use AI tools to assist with course creation, provided the resulting content maintains high-quality standards and adds value to the learner experience. Examples of appropriate use include:

  • Assistance: Using AI to assist with content creation, such as generating outlines, brainstorming ideas, or suggesting improvements.
  • Visual aids: AI-generated visuals or animations that enhance learner engagement are permitted, if they are high quality and clearly relevant to the audio instruction. Learn more about our minimum video standards.
  • Supplemental material: Leveraging AI to draft quizzes, assignments, or practice tests that are reviewed and edited by a human hand, to ensure accuracy and clarity.
  • Audio/video enhancement: Using AI tools for voiceovers or minor edits, provided the audio quality meets Udemy’s production standards.

If choosing to implement AI tools, make sure you’re employing the following best practices:

  • Ensure accuracy, relevance, and polish – Instructors are responsible for all content they post, so it’s your responsibility that the content submitted for review is reviewed for accuracy and coherence.
  • Prioritize quality over quantity – Using AI to rapidly generate multiple low-quality courses can result in poor learner experiences and may even lead to removal from the platform.
  • Add your unique flavor  – Take time to add your own unique insights, real-world examples, and instructor expertise to enrich the material and differentiate it from other market offerings.

What’s inappropriate & restricted

One of the biggest threats to course quality today is the misuse of AI tools. While AI can assist with brainstorming, refining, and improving your content, over-reliance on AI-generated material often leads to generic, impersonal, or inaccurate courses. The following types of content can lead to learner dissatisfaction and therefore are restricted by Udemy policies:

Fully AI-generated courses with minimal or no instructor input: Content that is entirely AI-generated, with no clear or minimal involvement from the instructor, fails to provide the personal connection learners seek. Even high-quality video and audio content can lead to a poor learner experience if it lacks meaningful instructor participation, engagement, or presence.

  • Example: Courses where the instructor's role is not apparent, leaving the content feeling impersonal or disconnected from the learner's needs.

Content that’s inaccurate or misleading: AI-generated material that contains factual errors, outdated information, or misleading claims that may confuse or misinform learners.

  • Example: A coding course generated by AI that includes obvious mistakes, incorrect syntax or outdated programming practices.

Low-quality AI-generated visuals and audio: Poorly generated images, visuals, diagrams, or audio that detract from the learning experience.

  • Example: AI-generated graphics with pixelation or irrelevant visuals that do not align with the course topic.

Content with grammar, syntax, or coherence Issues: Text or scripts generated by AI that contain grammatical errors, poor sentence structure, or incoherent explanations.

  • Example: Course narration with inconsistent phrasing, unnatural language, or abrupt transitions between concepts.

If you wish for your course to be eligible for admission to Udemy Business, please ensure that all content and presentation is manually reviewed, appropriate, and polished for a professional audience.

Escalation policy

Learn what happens when there is a violation of our policies.

If our team determines that your courses uses AI or TTS inappropriately, we may:

  • Decline to approve your course when it is submitted for review.
  • Disable content after it has been published, if it is identified as part of an internal review.
  • Repeated violations may result in account suspension or removal from the platform.

If you see content that you believe is low quality or should not be on the platform, please flag the content through the Report Abuse feature.
