What is buy now, pay later? And how does it work?
The buy now, pay later options through Afterpay and Klarna, allow eligible learners to make purchases on Udemy without paying for the entire purchase immediately. Instead, learners pay for the purchase in four payments, made every two weeks, without any interest.
Learners will, however, gain access to their courses, immediately after they make their first instalment payment, at the time of the initial purchase.
Here is an example of a payment schedule if you made a purchase on Udemy, totalling $100:
- $25 is due at the time of the initial purchase.
- Two weeks later a second $25 payment is due.
- Four weeks later a third $25 payment is due.
- Six weeks later, a fourth and final payment of $25 is due.

Do I have to make the first payment at the time of the initial purchase?
Yes. As outlined above, the first payment is due at the time of your initial, Udemy purchase. The remaining three installment payments are due every two weeks (without interest being charged).
Can I make additional payments? Ahead of the installment due dates?
Yes. If you wish to make an additional payment, ahead of your installment due dates, you can do so by logging into your Afterpay or Klarna account and making the payment. The amount owing will be adjusted, and your upcoming installment payments accordingly (if applicable).
What if I can’t make an installment payment when it's due?
If the required funds for the installment payment are not available, or the payment is not made when it is due, late fees may apply. Please contact Afterpay or Klarna directly for more information.
The buy now, pay later options are not operated by Udemy, and as a result, our support team cannot reschedule payments or adjust the amount owed.
I’m encountering an issue making a payment on the Afterpay or Klarna platform. What should I do?
Since Udemy Support does not have access to your accounts on these platforms, please contact Afterpay or Klarna for assistance.
What if I want a refund?
Refund requests for purchases made through the buy now, pay later option must meet our refund policy guidelines and can be submitted as outlined in How to Refund a Course.
- If you request a refund for the full amount of your initial purchase and it’s refunded, any upcoming payments will be cancelled, and any payments you have already made will be refunded back to the card you paid with.
- If you request a partial refund additional payments may be due, depending on the amount that is being refunded and how much has been paid towards the initial purchase.
- Due to the refund policies of Afterpay and Klarna, we are unable to complete refunds back to your original payment method for purchases that exceed 180 days after your initial payment. Udemy is only able to provide credit refunds in these circumstances.
Is there a minimum purchase total required in order to use a buy now, pay later option?
Yes. If a buy now, pay later option is available to you through Afterpay or Klarna, you will be able to select it on the Udemy Checkout page, provided your purchase total is $25 USD or more (before taxes if applicable).
