• How to Search for Courses on the Udemy Marketplace

Udemy has an extensive, multi-language library, which includes over 55,000 courses that have been created by expert instructors. The courses range across a wide range of categories, some of these include: business & entrepreneurship, programming, academics, the arts, health & fitness, language, music, technology, games, and much more.

This article outlines how you can search Udemy’s ever growing library, and find courses you’re interested in taking.

    Using the Marketplace Search Tool

You can quickly search for courses by using the search tool, which is located at the top of the Udemy marketplace page beside the Categories menu. You can also access the search tool on your My Courses page, and the Instructor Dashboard, if you’re an instructor.

Search results can be created by entering words related to the course and or subject into the search tool, and then clicking enter.

    Searching by Category

You can also search for courses by category. Simply move your cursor to the Categories icon at the top, and then select the category and or subcategory you wish to view.

    categories.png

The Featured courses for that category will appear below. If you wish to view additional courses for that category, however, then click All Courses under the category title.

    featured_all_courses.png

    Using the Search Tool Filters

There are several, different filters you can use on the All Courses page of a category to narrow your search.

On the left hand side, the filters include:

    • Level (basic, intermediate, expert, all levels),
    • Language (the course languages),
    • Features (quizzes, closed captions, coding exercises)
    • Price (paid or free)

On the right hand side, you can can sort by:

    • Highest Rated
    • Newest
    • Price: Low to High
    • Price: High to Low

Highest Rated sorts the courses based on the ratings average it’s received in the last 90 days. Newest, on the other hand, prioritizes courses that were more recently added to the Udemy marketplace.

Once you’ve located a course you’re interested in, you can see if the course is right for you by starting a free preview and watching a handful of lectures the instructor has selected. For more information on how to do this, and contacting the instructor if you have any questions regarding their course, please click here.

  • Purchase Issues - Turkey Residents

Having trouble completing a purchase?  Purchase attempts can fail for a variety of reasons: please have a look at some of the most common issues that can occur, when attempting to make a purchase on Udemy.

Please note: this article is regarding payment issues that students residing in Turkey may encounter, and how they can resolve them. For troubleshooting steps on how to resolve payment issues elsewhere, please refer to this article.

Common Troubleshooting Steps for Failed Payments

    • New Banking Regulations in Turkey
      • Please make sure that your credit card is authorized for e-commerce. Beginning August 17th, 2017, the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) of Turkey is closing all debit and credit cards issued in the country to e-commerce and international transactions. If your credit card is no longer authorized for e-commerce, you will need to contact your bank directly to have them re-authorize it for these types of transactions.
    • Multiple IP Addresses / VPN
      • Multiple IP addresses can trigger card authorization problems. We advise that you refrain from using a virtual private network (VPN) while making a purchase on Udemy, which may cause the transaction to fail.
    • Saved Payment Method
      • Are you trying to purchase with a saved payment method?  As an initial step, try deleting it and re-adding it to ensure the details are correct and up to date.  For more information about how to do this, please refer to this article.  You can also remove it from your Udemy profile by clicking here.
    • Incomplete Name
      • Please ensure you are entering your first and last name exactly as it appears on your card in the “name on card” field, or the purchase may be declined.
    • Postal Code Issues
      • Some countries contain alphanumeric postal codes, or no codes at all, which can occasionally cause errors when making a payment.  If you experience a postal code error, try entering all zeros (00000) at checkout.
    • Non-United States Debit Cards
      • Udemy is based in the United States. Since debit cards in some countries might not allow foreign transactions, we advise you to use a valid credit card. If you’re trying to purchase with a debit card that was issued outside of the U.S., and you are experiencing trouble making a payment, try calling your bank to ensure it’s authorized for international purchases.
    • International Purchases
      • Is the issuing country for your card different from your country of residence? If so, your card might not be approved. If you experience trouble using the card, contact Udemy Support and we can look into this for you.
    • Too Many Attempts / Card Usage in 24 hours
      • Some cards have usage limitations, and will automatically block payment attempts after a certain threshold has been reached.  If you’ve used your card a lot in the last 24 hours, try contacting your bank, or waiting until the next day to make a purchase.
    • CVC Code
    • Rocketmail Email Addresses
      • Payment attempts from Udemy accounts tied to a Rocketmail address will not be accepted by our system. Please try changing your email address to a non-Rocketmail domain and try again.
    • Cache Issues
      • If you're sure you're entering the right card number, but you’re seeing a notification it looks invalid, or the pay button isn't showing up, there may be a caching issue. Please clear your cache and try again. For instructions on how to clear your cache, please click here.

    Still Stuck?

To protect your security and privacy, a bank does not always share with Udemy why a payment method was declined.  Some of the most common reasons for bank declines include insufficient funds, card purchase limitations, card security policies, among other issues.

Because Udemy does not have direct insight into the reason for the decline, you will need to contact your bank or financial institution to solve the payment issue.

It’s important to let your bank know that you would like to make a payment on Udemy.com, that Udemy is a company based in the United States, the amount you expect to spend, and that we do not bill recurringly.

  • Student VAT / GST FAQs

    What is VAT / GST?

The VAT (Value Added Tax) or GST (Goods & Services Tax) is a form of consumption tax on goods and services. So, students who reside in nations that charge VAT / GST, may be required to pay the tax when they purchase a Udemy course. The rates and regulations for the tax vary, depending on the country.

Who has to pay VAT / GST?

Currently, Students who reside in the European Union (EU), South Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Australia will be charged the tax when they purchase a course.  Should the tax requirements change, Udemy reserves the right to change this policy to be in compliance at any time.

Is the VAT / GST added onto the course price?

Students purchasing courses in the EU, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Australia will see the course price and VAT / GST, all inclusive, on the marketplace. So, for example, if the course is priced at £20, then you will pay £20 for the purchase.

How can I determine how much VAT / GST was charged?

When you enroll in a Udemy course, you will be sent a receipt via email, which will break down the course price and VAT / GST separately. The amount you paid will be shown on your receipt beside Tax . The VAT is calculated based on the net amount, rather than the total amount.

So for example, in the United Kingdom, a 20% VAT is charged. If the course is priced at £45 on the Udemy marketplace, then, £7.50 in tax is paid to meet the course’s listed price. Please see the example below:

    45 / 1.2 = 37.5
    37.5 + 7.5 = 45

Where can I get a copy of my receipt?

If you require another copy of your receipt, you can quickly access one by heading to the Purchase History in your account. For instructions on how to access this page and to get a copy of your receipt, please click here.

Will Udemy remit the VAT / GST I paid?

As Udemy.com is a business to consumer website, we are not able to remove references to VAT / GST from our invoices. If a customer wants an invoice without reference to VAT / GST because they are a business and therefore do not pay VAT / GST, they would need to sign up for a Udemy for Business account.

If you are a business that is interested in the Udemy for Business platform, you can learn more here.

Is it possible to get invoices without the VAT / GST amount that was charged shown?

Due to legal obligations we must show the amount of VAT / GST that was charged for each transaction. We will not be able to remove VAT / GST amounts from invoices.

I entered in a Udemy coupon code. Why didn’t the course prices change?
Udemy sitewide coupon codes are automatically applied to your cart. Coupon codes that have been applied to your course(s) appear under the coupon code submission field. You can also hover over the coupon icon next to the course title in the cart to see the coupon that was applied to the course.

I entered in a coupon code from an instructor. How do I know which course it applies to?
Hover over the coupon icon next to the price to see which coupon code has applied to the course. If you enter multiple coupon codes to a course, the coupon that gives you the greatest discount will be applied.

Do free courses appear in my shopping cart?
You cannot add free courses to the cart. If a course is free, click Start learning now to enroll immediately. If you wishlist a free course, the course will appear in My Courses and under the Wishlist section of the checkout page. The free courses that are wishlisted cannot be moved to the cart.

    What’s in my receipt?
You receive an email receipt once you have purchased either an individual course or multiple courses through a shopping cart. You can also view your receipt in the Purchase History page which can be accessed through your profile dropdown. Your receipt will include the courses that you bought through the cart, the price that you paid for your individual courses, and then the total that you paid along with applicable taxes and credits that were used for the purchase. Free courses are not included in the receipt.

I just want to purchase one course. Do I have to use shopping cart?
Nope. If you want to purchase just one course, click Buy Now and enter your payment information. Alternatively, you can click Add to Cart to check out with a single course in the cart.

I don’t live in the US. Can I still use shopping cart?
Yes! Shopping cart is available for all Udemy students.

  • Using the Shopping Cart

With over 40,000 courses, our students come to Udemy to find the exact course that they’re looking for...in addition to a few other courses that also pique their interest! That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce Shopping Cart - a way to purchase multiple courses at once so that you can get out of the checkout process faster and get into courses sooner!

We’ve also introduced a way to Save for Later so that you purchase only what you want and can easily remember your saved courses when you return to Udemy.

Here are directions on how the shopping cart works.

Adding Courses to the Shopping Cart

To add a course to the shopping cart, click Add to Cart on the course landing page. The button is underneath Buy Now.

    add_to_cart.jpg

     Viewing Your Shopping Cart

    1. Click on the shopping cart icon in the upper right-hand corner of the page. A preview of your shopping cart will appear.
    2. At the bottom of the dropdown list, click Go to Cart.

    go_to_cart.jpg

    Editing the Shopping Cart

Removing a course from the shopping cart

If you decide you don't want to purchase a course that is in your shopping cart, click on Remove. The course will be permanently removed from your shopping cart. Please note that removing a course from the shopping cart cannot be undone.

    Save a course for later

If you would like to buy some of the courses in your shopping cart at a later time, click Save for Later. The courses that you save for later can be found lower down on the page under Saved for Later. When you're ready to add the course to your shopping cart again, you can simply click on Move to Cart.

Adding a course to your wish list

The wish list is used to save courses you’re interested in, but you don't want to buy immediately. The wish list is visible at the bottom of the page and on the My Courses page, under the wish list tab. When you're ready to add the course to your shopping cart again, click Move to Cart.

    Applying Coupons

Before completing your purchase, please be sure to add any coupon codes you've received from Udemy’s promotional emails or instructors.

    1. To the right of the listed courses, enter the coupon code where it says Apply Coupon Code under Checkout
    2. Click Apply
    3. If you visit a course landing page with a valid coupon code already applied, the coupon code is carried over to the cart when you add the course to cart
    4. If you apply a valid coupon code on the course page, the coupon code is carried over to the cart when you add the course to cart

    apply_coupon.jpg

All valid coupon codes, either entered on the course page or the cart, will be automatically applied to all eligible courses and the new price will appear on all eligible courses. So, you can enter all the coupons you’ve received, including instructor coupon codes, and the system will do the rest for you!

The coupon codes that have been entered will appear underneath the Apply Coupon Code option. You can see which specific courses have had coupon codes successfully applied to them, by clicking on the coupon code.

    Checkout Process

When you're ready to buy the courses in your shopping cart:

    1. Click Checkout to the right of the shopping cart.
    2. Select your preferred payment method. Courses can be purchased using PayPal or a credit card.
    3. Confirm your purchase.
    4. Click Complete Payment to the right of the screen, or at the bottom of the checkout page

  • For German and Austrian Students Only: I Need a Special Receipt for my Course Purchase

If you need a receipt for a course you have purchased you can access it by logging into your Udemy account and clicking on the drop-down menu next to your image on the right hand corner of the screen, from here, select “Einkäufe & Quittungen”. This will pull up a list of all of your course purchases ordered by date. Find the course you need the receipt for and then click on the button “Quittung” on the right hand side to open your receipt. You can print out your receipt from here.

Users in Germany and Austria have expressed to us that local tax authorities require bills to display addresses for both the bill provider, as well as the recipient. As Udemy payments are processed by a third party, we do not collect or store your address information and hence are not displaying them in our billing receipts.

However, for your convenience we have designed templates you can enter your address and billing details into and submit them to your local tax authorities in combination with the purchase receipt you can find in your account. Please note that these templates are not official bills and serve as an addition to your offical Udemy purchase recipt.

Instructions for German and Austrian Students:

    1. Select the template based on your country of residence (Germany or Austria)
    2. Access your official Udemy receipt in your account as outlined above
    3. Enter the information from your Udemy receipt into the billing Template

  • How are Udemy Courses Priced? Student FAQs

Have questions regarding how Udemy courses are priced? Here are some of our most frequently asked questions.

How does pricing work on Udemy ?

The instructor of the course determines the list price of the course.  In addition, both Instructors and Udemy can offer discounts on courses at anytime. Once you have purchased a course, you are able to learn at your own pace, and you have lifetime access to the course material as long as you continue to have access to your Udemy account.

Does Udemy offer promotions on courses?

Yes! We frequently run promotions that offer courses at great, low prices! If you want to be alerted of our promotions, please make sure you’re subscribed to our promotional emails. You can review your notification settings by here.

Why is the price listed for a course at Udemy.com different than the price for it on the mobile app?

The marketplace for Udemy’s mobile applications are owned and managed by Apple (iOS app) and Google Play (Android app), and Udemy does not have control over the price tier structure provided by these platforms. As a result, the course price listed on the mobile apps may differ slightly from the course price posted on Udemy.com. This is because the pricing matrix for these mobile providers will select the price tier that is closest to the course price set by the Udemy instructor, but they do not always match up exactly.

Additionally, courses on the mobile app may have a different price listed during a sale, because there is no way to enter coupon codes on the Udemy mobile apps, like there is on the web version of Udemy.com. If you encounter a price discrepancy on the mobile app, and have a coupon code to discount a course, please enter the code on our web version at www.udemy.com. Once you have purchase the course at Udemy.com you will also be able to access it on the mobile app.

How are you calculating exchange rates?

We are using a country-specific price tier matrix to determine a student’s localized price. You can see the price tier matrix here.  The matrix will be updated periodically based on market conditions.

A course I was enrolled in has been unpublished; do I still have access to the content?

Yes, you’ll continue to have lifetime access to all the courses you are enrolled in so long as you have access to your Udemy account. Please be sure to log in to your Udemy account to access your courses.

I bought a course and it’s now being offered at a lower price, what should I do?

We will honor the best price available for any courses purchased up to 30 days after the initial purchase date. Please contact Support with the exact title of the course in question so we can process the price adjustment.

    Still have questions?

Contact Udemy Support and we’ll be happy to answer your questions.

  • Purchase Issues

Having trouble completing a purchase?  Purchase attempts can fail for a variety of reasons: please have a look at some of the most common issues that can happen, when attempting to make a purchase on Udemy.

For Turkey residents, please click here to view troubleshooting steps on how to resolve payment issues.

Common Troubleshooting Steps for Failed Payments

    Saved Payment Method

    • Are you trying to purchase with a saved payment method?  As an initial step, try deleting it and re-adding it to ensure the details are correct and up to date.  For more information about how to do this, please refer to this article.  You can also remove it from your Udemy profile by clicking here.

    Incomplete Name

    • Please ensure you are entering your first and last name exactly as it appears on your card in the “name on card” field, or the purchase may be declined.

    Non-United States Debit Cards

    • Udemy is based in the United States. Debit cards in some countries might not allow foreign transactions. If you’re trying to purchase with a debit card that was issued outside of the U.S., and you are experiencing trouble making a payment, please call your bank to ensure it’s authorized for international purchases.

    International Purchases

    • Is the issuing country for your card different from your country of residence? If so, your card might not be approved. If you experience trouble using the card, contact Udemy Support and we can look into this for you.

    Multiple IPs

    • Multiple IP addresses can trigger card authorization problems. We advise that you refrain from using a virtual private network (VPN) while making a purchase on Udemy, which may cause the transaction to fail.

    Postal Code Issues

    • Some countries contain alphanumeric postal codes, or no codes at all, which can occasionally cause errors when making a payment.  If you experience a postal code error, try entering all zeros (00000) at checkout.

Too Many Attempts / Card Usage in 24 hours

    • Some cards have usage limitations, and will automatically block payment attempts after a certain threshold has been reached.  If you’ve used your card a lot in the last 24 hours, try contacting your bank, or waiting until the next day to make a purchase.

    CVC Code

    Rocketmail Email Addresses

    • Payment attempts from Udemy accounts tied to a Rocketmail address will not be accepted by our system. Please try changing your email address to a non-Rocketmail domain and try again.

    Cache Issues
