Understanding International Transaction Fees and Currency Conversion in Certain Countries
Read articleAt Udemy, we understand that transparency in billing is important and that unexpected charges can be frustrating. This article explains international transaction and currency conversion charges, and why they may occur when purchasing courses on Udemy.
Why you may see additional charges
Purchases made on Udemy are done so via one of our supported currencies. For example, our Brazilian customers will see prices in Brazilian reais (BRL), or Peruvian Sol for our customers in Peru. While Udemy charges customers in their designated currency, there are instances where you might see an additional charges on your credit card statement. Here's why:
Currency conversion: Some transactions on Udemy are processed through our designated payment processors, which may use currencies like USD or EUR. This can lead to currency conversion if your credit card company processes transactions in a different currency. Your credit card company may charge a foreign exchange fee in such cases.
Cross-border transactions: Another scenario where additional charges can occur is when your credit card and Udemy are registered in different countries. Even if the currency used in the transaction matches your local currency, your credit card company might apply an international transaction fee.
If you notice these aforementioned transactions in your banking information and have additional questions about them and why they were applied, please reach out to your financial institution for more information.
How to minimize additional charges
While some additional charges may be out of our control, you can take steps to minimize them.
Consider using a credit card that allows you to hold multiple currencies. Such cards often offer better exchange rates and lower conversion fees. We recommend contacting your financial institution if you have more questions regarding how to minimize these charges.
Still have questions?
If you still have questions about billing or additional charges, please contact your financial institution or Udemy Support.

Description: a detailed explanation of what the course covers and why you should enroll.
Featured review: the course landing page may also include a Featured review, which highlights a positive experience a student had with the course.

Please note that instead of using a simple lifetime average, Udemy calculates a course's average star rating by considering a number of different factors such as the number of ratings, the age of ratings, and the likelihood of fraudulent ratings.
Below the ratings are the reviews students have submitted for the course. Reviews include comments from the student about the courses, as well as their rating for it. As a result, student reviews can be very helpful in helping you determine whether the course will meet your educational goals.
In addition, this section may also include a Featured Review, which highlights a positive experience a student had with the course.

I paid for my Pix today but I still can’t access my course. What can I do?

If you notice your Pix payment is still pending after 24 hours, please contact Udemy Support and provide a receipt showing that the Pix was paid, so we can assist you further.

If you have paid for two Pix payments for the same course, however, then please contact Udemy Support to initiate a refund.
Can I choose the due date for my Pix?
No. Once you have issued a Pix for the course we recommend paying the Pix within 5 days to prevent it from expiring. If the Pix expires, however, you can get another one for the course or use a different payment method to gain access to the course.
Can I pay my Pix after its due date?
No. We recommend paying the Pix within 5 days to prevent it from expiring. If the Pix expires, however, you will need to get another one for the course or use a different payment method to purchase it.
I didn't pay my Pix in time; can I still pay for a course with another Pix?
Yes. We recommend paying the Pix within 5 days to prevent it from expiring. If the Pix payment expires, however, you can get another one for the course.
Do I need to provide proof that the Pix is paid so you can add the course to my account? Or, if I provide proof that the Pix was paid, can you add the course to my account?
No. The course you purchased with Pix is added to your Udemy account automatically after we receive confirmation from our payment processor that the Pix was paid.
Generally speaking, this should not take longer than 30 minutes. In some cases, however, it may take longer before the transaction is processed. If you notice your Pix payment is still pending after 24 hours, please contact Udemy Support and provide a receipt showing that the Pix was paid, so we can assist you further.

Credit Card Security
Read articleUdemy never stores your full credit or debit card information in our systems. Instead, we work with credit card payment processors who are certified under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).
When you enter your credit or debit card details on Udemy, that information is sent directly to secure databases maintained by these payment processors, who then complete the transaction. That partner will then provide us with a portion of the stored information (such as the last four digits of your card number) to help do things like document your purchases and label your saved cards.
During this process, our partner will also provide us with a randomly generated alphanumeric ID called a "token". This token allows us to reference a saved card during future transactions, even though we don’t have the full card number on file ourselves. Because we store a token instead of the full credit card number you originally provided, there is no way for anyone who is logged in to your Udemy account to obtain your full credit card information from within your account. In addition, there is no way for a third party to reverse-engineer a token ID to obtain the credit card information.

Why is the currency at checkout different from the currency assigned to my account?
Some banks and financial institutions will not authorize international payments in certain currencies, and as a result, the purchases are processed in another currency at the equivalent price. For example, a learner in Brazil may see prices displayed in BRL, but pay in USD, if they choose certain payment methods at checkout.
If you have any additional questions regarding your financial institution's restrictions or policies regarding this, we recommend you contact them directly for more information.
Does Udemy charge any currency conversion fees?
Udemy does not charge any currency conversion fees when you purchase a course.
If you purchase a course in a currency that’s different from your payment method’s currency, however, your financial institution or the third-party payment processor may apply a currency conversion rate or fee.

Taxes: Student FAQ
Read articleUdemy has a legal obligation to collect applicable transaction taxes including VAT (Value Added Tax), GST (Goods & Services Tax), or other types of sales taxes, for purchases, which may vary depending on a student's local, state, and country jurisdiction. This article includes answers to frequently asked questions we receive regarding taxes for Udemy purchases.
Who has to pay transaction taxes on Udemy purchases?
Students who reside in regions that collect transaction taxes like VAT, GST, or other types of sales taxes may be required to pay a tax when they make a purchase on the Udemy platform. Taxes are calculated based on a variety of factors such as account and billing information.
Udemy reserves the right to change this policy to be in compliance with tax requirements at any time.
How can I preview how much transaction tax will be charged?
During the checkout process, any applicable taxes will be included in your order total before you are charged. The tax amount that was charged will be indicated in your receipt and the tax rate will be reflected in the transaction’s invoice.
Depending on the region you live in and the tax being collected, tax will be included in the display price or included in the total. For example, students purchasing courses in tax-inclusive countries will see the tax included in the course price. So, if the course is priced at £19.99, then the student would pay £19.99 for the purchase.
Students purchasing courses in tax-exclusive countries will see the tax displayed on the checkout page as “Estimated Tax”.
Where can I see how much transaction tax was charged after I make a Udemy purchase?
When you complete a purchase on Udemy, you will be sent a receipt via email, which will break down the purchase price and taxes separately. The amount you paid will be shown on your receipt beside Tax.Where can I get an invoice?
You can quickly access an invoice for your purchase one by heading to the Purchase history in your account. Learn more about Udemy invoices.
Is it possible to get receipts without the transaction tax amount that was charged shown? Or can Udemy remit the transaction taxes I paid?
Due to legal obligations we must show the amount of tax that was charged for each transaction. We will not be able to remove tax amounts from receipts. As Udemy.com is a business to consumer website, we are not able to remove references to taxes from our receipts or invoices. If a customer wants a receipt or invoice without taxes included because they are a business and therefore do not pay taxes, they would need to sign up for a Udemy Business account. If you are a business that is interested in the Udemy Business platform, you can learn more here.

What are Udemy credits?
Udemy Credits are a balance that is automatically counted towards your next course purchase, even though the credits have no cash value. So, for example, if you’ve had $5 of USD credits added to your account by our team, and the next course you decide to purchase is listed at $30 USD, then you will only be charged $25 USD.
How are credits used?
Udemy credits in your account will be automatically applied to your next course purchase. So, when you select a course and proceed to the payment page, you will see the total credits that have been applied to the purchase. In addition, if you have any credits left in your account, the remaining total will also be posted.
Please note that Udemy credits can only be applied on purchases that take place at Udemy.com, and not on the Android or iOS Udemy mobile app.
How long do I have to use my credits?
You can confirm the expiration date of your credits by looking at the top of your credit history page.
I received a gift or promotional code for Udemy credits. How do I redeem them?
If you have received an email for a gift or a promotional code, click on the redemption link in the email to redeem your credits. Once you have redeemed the code, the credits will be added to your account.
What if I lose my gift or promotional code for Udemy credits?
If you lose your gift or promotional code, please contact customer support for the retailer where the code was purchased. Since the initial transaction did not occur on the Udemy platform, we do not have access to the necessary information and cannot offer additional assistance.
What happens if I refund a course that had Udemy credits applied to the purchase?
If you are granted a refund for a course purchase, which used Udemy credits towards it, the credits that were applied to the initial purchase will be returned to your Udemy account. Please note that Udemy’s standard refund policy applies.
Why is there an option to choose Udemy Credits for my refund instead of to my original payment method?
If your transaction is eligible for a refund to your original payment method, you can choose to receive that refund in the form of Udemy Credits instead. The credits will be added to your account immediately after your refund is processed, so that you can use them towards your next purchase.
With refunds to your original payment method, it may take 5 to 10 business days before the funds are posted to your bank account, or longer, depending on your financial institution and location.
For more information regarding our refund policy, please click here.
I selected Udemy Credits for my refund but I’ve changed my mind. Can I have the refund sent to my original payment method instead?
No. Once Udemy Credits are selected as the refund method and the transaction is processed, the refund cannot be reversed in our system and sent to your original payment method instead. Udemy Credits are added to your account immediately after the refund is processed.

If you have purchased a gift or promotional code from a third-party vendor, you will need to contact that vendor directly, for information regarding the company’s refund policies.

Yes. Udemy credits in your account will also be automatically applied to a course you purchase as a gift.
Can I use my credits on the mobile app?
No. Udemy credits can only be applied to purchases that take place at Udemy.com, and not on the Android or iOS Udemy mobile app.

You can check your account’s credit total, and review your credit history, by navigating to your Udemy credits page. You can access the page by moving your cursor to your initials or profile image at the top right hand, and then by clicking on Udemy credits in the dropdown menu.
You can also get there by clicking here.
In your account’s credit history you can review when and how many Udemy credits were added to your account, the status of the credits (for example: whether they were used towards a course purchase), and their expiration date.
Please note that your credit history page is only accessible at Udemy.com, and not through the Android or iOS Udemy mobile app.
Can I request to have my credits put on hold? Or select credits with a specific expiration date to be applied to my next course purchase?
No. Udemy.com is set up to automatically apply Udemy credits to your next course purchase, regardless of the expiration date, until all your account credits have been used.
Can I request to transfer my credits to someone else? Or send credits as a gift?
No. Currently, Udemy credits cannot be transferred from your account to someone else or sent as a gift. More information regarding how you can send a Udemy gift is available in this Help Center article.
Promotional codes
Can I redeem more than one promotional code for credits?
Generally speaking, promotional code campaigns are limited to one code per person. Additionally, if you qualify to receive more than one promotional code as part of separate campaigns, only one promotional code can be redeemed for credits, until you have applied that first set of credits towards a course purchase (or until the first set of promotional credits expire).
I received an additional promotional amount with my gift code. How does this work?
Udemy or our partners may run certain campaigns, during which you may receive a promotional amount with the purchase of a gift code in a single code. The gift code amount is equal to the amount paid to purchase the code. The promotional amount is the additional unpaid value that you may receive in Udemy Credits on top of the gift code amount, as detailed in the campaign.
When you redeem the single code, the gift code amount will be applied to your account as Udemy Credits that never expire. The promotional amount will be applied to your account as Udemy Credits that have an expiration date (except where prohibited by law). The promotional amount must be redeemed for Udemy Credits and applied to course purchases before they expire. The expiration date of the promotional amount can be found on the code’s redemption page or by clicking here.

Udemy Coupons: FAQ
Read articleThis article outlines how you can redeem a coupon you’ve received for a Udemy course, and begin your learning journey at a discounted price. Gift codes for Udemy courses can be redeemed the same way as a coupon. In addition, the article below includes answers to some of the frequently asked questions we receive about redeeming coupons.
- How do I redeem a coupon or gift code for a course?
- Why do I see “sorry, this course is not included in this promotion” when I try to enter the coupon code?
- How long are coupon codes good for?
- What’s the difference between a Udemy coupon code and an Instructor’s coupon? How can I tell?
- Why can’t I enter coupon codes on the Udemy mobile app?
- I recently purchased a course but now I have a coupon code that will discount the course price to lower than what I paid. What can I do?
How do I redeem a coupon or gift code for a course?
Coupon and gift codes can be redeemed at Udemy.com. Currently, however, coupon and gift codes are not supported on our mobile app. If you have a coupon or gift code for a course that you would like to redeem, you can quickly do so in the shopping cart.
Learn how to apply a coupon code while using the shopping cart.
Please note that not all instructors have opted into Udemy promotions, so, some courses may not be eligible for a coupon that is part of an ongoing Udemy sale.
Why do I see “sorry, this course is not included in this promotion” when I try to enter the coupon code?
Since Udemy courses are created and managed by the instructors themselves, they determine whether their courses are going to be included in our promotions and sales. So, if you see this notice, it means the coupon code you’ve received cannot be redeemed for that course. Most instructors, however, are enrolled in Udemy promotions. So you’ll very likely be able to redeem the coupon code for a similar course. For tips on how to search for courses on Udemy, please click here.
In addition, please note that Udemy promotions can vary in length and scope, and not all sales apply to our entire marketplace.
How long are coupon codes good for?
Udemy coupon codes: If you have a coupon code that’s part of a Udemy promotion, then the coupon code can be used to discount eligible courses, until the promotion ends. The duration of specific Udemy promotions may vary. Some promotions may run for several days, while others may run for multiple weeks. In addition, the maximum amount of redemptions for coupons can vary, depending on the coupon or the promotion.
Instructor coupon codes: Like Udemy codes, coupons provided by instructors may expire or reach a maximum number of redemptions. Our coupon system allows instructors to generate different types of coupons with varying expiration windows and redemption limits. We expect our instructors to communicate the specifics of each coupon they distribute, but if you're unsure about the terms of a coupon code an instructor has provided for you, we advise asking them directly.
What’s the difference between a Udemy coupon code and an Instructor’s coupon? How can I tell?
Since Udemy courses are created and managed by the instructors themselves, they can also create coupon codes for their courses if they wish. These coupons can be redeemed the same way as outlined above, at Udemy.com.
Generally speaking, instructors forward coupons they’ve created to their students in promotional announcements from their courses, which often include a personalized message from them. In addition, many instructors also run their own promotions separately from Udemy, via their own social media channels and ad campaigns.
Why can’t I enter coupon codes on the Udemy mobile app?
The Udemy mobile app features the payment systems for Google Play (Android) and the Apple App Store (iOS), and as a result, there is currently no way to redeem a Udemy coupon on those platforms. Instructions on how to enter coupon or gift codes at Udemy.com are posted above.
I recently purchased a course but now I have a coupon code that will discount the course price to lower than what I paid. What can I do?
We will honor the best price available for any courses purchased up to 30 days after the initial purchase date. Please contact our support team with the exact title of the course and the coupon code you have, so we can process the price adjustment.

How are Udemy Courses Priced? Student FAQ
Read articleHave questions regarding how Udemy courses are priced? Here are some of our most frequently asked questions.
- How does pricing work for a Udemy course? Are there recurring charges?
- Does Udemy also offer subscriptions?
- Does Udemy offer promotions on courses?
- Why did I see a different price for the same course?
- How are you calculating exchange rates? Does Udemy charge currency conversion fees?
- Do I have to pay taxes when I purchase a course?
How does pricing work for a Udemy course? Are there recurring charges?
The instructor of the course determines the list price of the course. In addition, both instructors and Udemy can offer discounts on courses at any time.
Once you have completed a purchase for an individual, marketplace course, you can learn at your own pace and you will not be charged for the course again. You will have lifetime access to the course material as long as you continue to have access to your Udemy account, and Udemy continues to have a license to that course.
Does Udemy also offer subscriptions?
Yes. In addition to purchasing individual, marketplace courses, eligible learners can also enroll in our subscription offerings.
Learners enrolled in a subscription will have unlimited access to the subscription’s content, as long as they are paying the subscription fee. Learn how to sign up for a Udemy subscription.
Does Udemy offer promotions on courses?
Yes! We frequently run promotions that offer courses at great, low prices! If you want to be alerted of our promotions, please make sure you’re subscribed to our promotional emails. You can review your notification settings on your account notifications page.
Why did I see a different price for the same course?
Udemy’s goal is to help match students to the right course at the right price, and occasionally that may result in different promotions for the same course. For example, promotions may be run that target different regions, markets, or prospective learners. In addition, instructors also have the ability to run independent promotions for their courses if they wish.
Further, when purchasing courses via our mobile app, depending on your device, location, and what country your Udemy account is registered in, your payment options may include Apple App Store and Google Play. Udemy does not have control over the price tier structure provided by these platforms. As a result, the course price listed on the mobile apps may differ slightly from the course price posted on Udemy.com. This is because the pricing matrix for these mobile providers will select the price tier that is closest to the course price set by the Udemy instructor, but they do not always match up exactly.
Additionally, courses on the mobile app may have a different price listed during a sale, because there is no way to enter coupon codes on the Udemy mobile apps, like there is on the web version of Udemy.com.
If you encounter a price discrepancy on the mobile app, and have a coupon code to discount a course, please enter the code on our web version at www.udemy.com. Once you have purchased the course at Udemy.com you will also be able to access it on the mobile app.
How are you calculating exchange rates? Does Udemy charge currency conversion fees?
We are using a country-specific price tier matrix to determine a student’s localized price. The matrix will be updated periodically based on market conditions.
Udemy does not charge any currency conversion fees when you purchase a course. Learn more about currencies and Udemy.
